Almost Eaten Alive
This story takes place in August 2020.
One of my best friends was getting married, and we had to come up with a bachelor party during covid. Our genius idea was to rent a big old shit RV. There was 4 of us total including myself. My 2 friends took the groom to Deas Island in Vancouver. It was my job to pick up the RV and meet them there. Deas Island is an amazing park. It has fire pits, benches, bathrooms, walking paths and water all around it. We parked the RV in the parking lot at the very back of the island, surrounded by a large field before a small forest that butted up against the water. There were a few fire pits and a few park benches at this end as well. We then pulled out some chairs, the cooler and started a fire and poured some drinks. We were really hoping the park ranger would not bother to clear the park and would end up locking us in with a big gate in the entrance. Lucky for us he didn’t do his rounds and he locked up with us in there.
We had a very fun time, I had some Olights out as it was now very dark. Around 2am we decided to go to bed and this is where everything happened. The groom and myself were going to sleep in the R, one at either end. The other two guys decided to sleep in a tiny 2 man tent while wearing N95 masks. This was as COVID safe as we could do given the circumstances and our current mental state.
As I was dosing off, I realized I could hear some howling outside. As I woke up and regained my composure, the howling, yipping and barking was insanely loud, and all around us. It was surreal. I went into my bag and grabbed my Seeker 2 and quickly put it on turbo and looked out the window. Immediately everything went silent, it was shocking how quiet it got. I then pointed the light at the tent and could see both of my friends with their pale white faces pressed up into the bug netting trying to see the Coyotes. They 100% were utterly terrified of the Coyotes surrounding us. I invited them into the RV, but they both decided they were more scared of Covid. I ended up having to keep shining the light out the windows like a lighthouse to hold off the advancing animals.
The funniest part was the Groom was so drunk he slept through the whole thing.
In the morning the Park ranger knocked on the door at 7am sharp, and I could tell he was pissed. I was ready for him. I opened the door and started giving him shit for locking us in. I could barley keep a straight face.
